Mental Capacity Act Learning Days
We have now held very successful learning events in 2007 and 2008 where delegates learnt about the Mental Capacity Act (2005) which came into effect from April 2007. They learned to answer ‘yes’ to the following questions -
- Do you know how to test for mental capacity?
- Do you when you must involve an Independent Mental Capacity Advocate?
- Do you know the difference between an ‘advance statement’ and an ‘advance decision’?
In addition, delegates learnt how to complete an Advanced Care Planning document. This enables residents to express their wishes about how they wish to be supported in the future, should they ever be unable to express their wishes.

More than 95% of all delegates in all previous courses confirmed that they had an increased understanding of the Mental Capacity Act after completing the course!
Nearly 95% said they had increased confidence and competence in discussing Advance Care Planning with their residents.
Speakers
David Pennington, who is leading the implementation of the Mental Capacity Act in the South West of England, gave a very enthusiastic overview of the Act and its implications
Andrew Makin, Director of Nursing, Registered Nursing Homes Association, contributed more knowledge on the role of IMCAs as well as a very illuminating presentation and discussion on Resuscitation Decisions
Dr Harry Yoxall, a practising GP and Secretary of Somerset Local Medical Committee wittily portrayed the life of a GP and how care home staff can ease the burden!
